Setting the Date of the Baby Shower
Baby Shower Planning: Setting the Date
The first thing you should do as host is set a date and time for the shower. Begin by asking the expectant mom (and dad, if he's included) at least two to three months before the baby's due date about available dates. Because her schedule will probably be hectic in the weeks prior to and right after the baby's birth, ask her if she'd prefer a shower before or after the baby's born. Both times have advantages. Parents expecting their first child may need the baby-related items they may receive at the shower held three to six weeks before the baby's birth. And because the last weeks of pregnancy can be trying, a pre baby shower can give the mom-to-be emotional support.
If the mom-to-be prefers a shower after the baby's birth, you'll have the advantage of knowing the baby's sex (which some parents still choose not to learn or make public before the baby arrives). Guests can then buy or make sex-specific gifts. Of course, this shower sets the stage for an appearance by the real guest of honor - the baby!
Anticipate potential scheduling problems for your guests, particularly if your list includes people traveling long distances. Try and find a date and time that accommodates everyone.
Don't forget to check the calendar for major holidays or cultural events that may conflict with your shower date like Memorial Day weekend or the Super Bowl.
